Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662)
His famous statement is "the heart has reasons which the reason does not understand." Thus, like Plato, Pascal puts emotion and intuition above logical reasoning. Hence, for him, the guide to the truth is the heart. He was convinced that certain basic propositions in our thinking cannot be demonstrated, rather we arrive at them through some special insight.
Michel de Montaigne (1533 - 1592)
For Montaigne, skepticism is a liberating force which frees one from intellectual confinement to a particular rigid set of ideas. There's no more likelihood that this is true than that that is true. we should never make any permanent commitment to any doctrines, but instead assume a perpetual attitude of inquiry. He believes that an attitude of construtive skepticism could help prevent fanaticism, dogmatism and their concomitant social ills. For him, to be a human is to consciously weigh alternatives and control one's behaviour through an act of judgment.
Enhancing The Rights Of Women
HUMAN rights are guaranteed in our
constitution. That explains why countries all over the world ratified different
conventions and treaties on the issue. These include the United Nations Charter
on Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights. Nigeria
is a signatory to most of these laws. Virtually all of them have been
domesticated.
Halt The Middle Belt Killings Now!
FROM the central parts of Nigeria
are gory tales of wanton killings that should elicit shock and urgent action
from all Nigerians. Indeed a sizeable part of the area has for years remained a
killing field where hundreds of lives have been wasted, no thanks to the
frequent clashes between local farmers and nomadic Fulani herdsmen. In fact, no
week passes without media reports of fresh attacks resulting in the killing of
several innocent individuals, especially women and children.
